Gabriel scores 17 as João Pedro misses out and Fernandes stays on the bench

Gabriel scored 17 and Haaland eight for the most-captained, while João Pedro missed Chelsea's defeat and Fernandes stayed on United's bench. Every Gameweek 8 match, with our projections.

Gabriel's gentle header against Everton and a clean sheet made 17 points. Erling Haaland scored once in a 2-1 defeat at Villa Park. Two big names did not play at all: João Pedro felt something in training the day before Chelsea lost 2-0 to Spurs, and Bruno Fernandes watched on from the bench as Manchester United lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth.

Nicolas Jackson scored both of Villa's goals for 13 points and Oscar Bobb, Mathys Tel and James Hill had 11 points each.

Our own team moved the armband from Gabriel to Igor Thiago in the last seconds before the deadline. Thiago finished with five, and our team with 62 points against FPL's average of 27, a green arrow from 1,623,565 to 815,859 overall.

Jackson twice, and Haaland finally scores at Villa Park

Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester City

Nicolas Jackson scored both of Aston Villa's goals, and City's perfect start to the league season ended at the ground where they have now lost four league visits running. Marc Guéhi's heavy touch gave John McGinn the ball for the first, which Jackson finished after cutting inside Elliot Anderson. Haaland headed the equaliser from Iliman Ndiaye's cross, his first league goal at Villa Park since September 2022, before the substitute Ibrahim Mbaye ran down the right and set up Jackson's winner.

Haaland's goal and two bonus points made eight. Rayan Cherki went off at half-time with Guéhi, both on yellow cards, and finished with no points; our projections had him at 2.2. Joško Gvardiol played the whole match for one point.

No João Pedro, and ten men at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham

João Pedro was not in the squad. Xabi Alonso said on Saturday that he had felt something in training on Friday and would need tests. Chelsea lost late: Mike Penders put the ball into his own net, Cole Palmer was sent off three minutes later for a second yellow card, and Tel shot in from outside the box to make it 2-0.

Palmer finished on minus one and will miss Wednesday's League Cup tie at Liverpool, but will be back against Manchester United in the league. Morgan Rogers had one point and a booking. Spurs' clean sheet gave Antonín Kinský nine points and Jan Paul van Hecke seven, and Tel, projected for about a point, had eleven.

Arsenal's centre-backs score, and Calafiori starts on the bench

Arsenal 2-0 Everton

Ezri Konsa scored early and Gabriel in the second half, from Viktor Gyökeres's and Ben White's passes. Arsenal moved level on points with City at the top. Gabriel had 17 points and Konsa 14 points, and David Raya seven points with the clean sheet.

Riccardo Calafiori was left on the bench and came on for 22 minutes, for one point. Mikel Arteta said after the match that Calafiori had a small problem the club had not yet identified.

Groß in his own net, and Isak four minutes later

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton

Pascal Groß turned the ball into his own net after 17 minutes, and Alexander Isak made it 2-0 four minutes later, with Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola credited with the assists.

Groß finished with zero points, and Maxim De Cuyper with one point. Isak's goal and the maximum bonus made nine points, and Virgil van Dijk also had nine points.

Fernandes watches, and Bournemouth score three

Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth

Fernandes said after Wednesday's 4-1 defeat at Como that the way United pressed had been the staff's choice and not his. Michael Carrick named him among the substitutes, called the decision "pure football", and sent on Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey instead. The row was public by the deadline; our projections still had Fernandes at 5.5 points and Bryan Mbeumo at 5.2 points, which they failed to live up to.

Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scored before half-time, and Evanilson added the third after 71 minutes. United have gone eight games without a win, and Sky Sports reported before the match that no decision had been taken on Carrick beyond Sunday.

The other five

Newcastle won 2-0 at Crystal Palace with goals from William Osula and Harvey Barnes early in the second half; Lewis Hall's clean sheet was worth five. At Hull, Oli McBurnie scored a penalty after a mistake by Caoimhín Kelleher, and Thiago set up Dango Ouattara's equaliser in a 1-1 draw. Sunderland and Leeds drew 0-0, and James Trafford's four saves and the maximum bonus made ten; Dominic Calvert-Lewin had two.

Bobb's first league goal for Fulham, ten minutes from the end, won it 1-0 at Coventry, and Bernd Leno's clean sheet was worth eight. On Friday, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest drew 1-1, with Leif Davis twice clearing Morgan Gibbs-White's efforts off the line.

Our team: Thiago with the armband, and 25 points on the bench

Gabriel had the armband until the last seconds before the deadline, when we moved it to Thiago. Our projections had Gabriel slightly ahead, at 5.5 to Thiago's 5.1, with Haaland, our vice-captain, top of the Gameweek at 6.2. Barcola, who came in for Bukayo Saka, started at Anfield and had six.

Many things could have gone better for us this Gameweek. Since we own no Chelsea players, I expected to climb, and we did. The most annoying thing is that we still have our Bench Boost to use, and with 25 points on the bench this Gameweek it would have helped us a lot. Oh, did I mention that we started Bobby Thomas as well?

Two of our defenders finished the weekend with a doubt over them. Thomas went off after 59 minutes against Fulham with a problem in his lower leg, and Frank Lampard said he did not yet know how bad it was. Calafiori's problem is the one Arteta could not yet name.

On the bench, Leno had eight, António Silva eight for Bournemouth's clean sheet, Van Hecke seven and Diego Gómez two, 25 in all, against 62 from the eleven.

Mr. Tilt against The Scout

Mr. Tilt's eleven, picked straight from FPL Tilt's projections, won Gameweek 8 by 78 to 48 against The Scout's, with Gabriel's 17, Konsa's 14 and Trafford's ten against Palmer's red card and João Pedro's absence. Both made Haaland captain. That makes three Gameweeks out of three, 190 to 150 overall.

Chelsea's tests on João Pedro, Arsenal's word on Calafiori, Coventry's on Thomas and United's on Carrick are still to come.
