Gibbs-White has stopped scoring, and is creating at his best rate in four seasons

Morgan Gibbs-White scored 15 league goals last season from chances worth about 11. This season he has one, a penalty, but he is setting up chances at his best rate in four seasons. A review of what he is worth in FPL now.

Twice on Friday night at Portman Road, Morgan Gibbs-White beat Christian Walton and watched Leif Davis clear the ball off the line. Forest drew 1-1 with Ipswich, and Gibbs-White finished with two FPL points, which is his season in short.

Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest, £7.9m) scored 15 league goals last season, more than twice as many as in any of his three seasons before. This season he has one, a soft penalty at Anfield in August.

The goals have gone, but the rest of his game has not. He is setting up chances at a higher rate than in any of his last four seasons, and it is the part that decides what he is worth in FPL now.

Last season was the exception

Last season's 15 goals came from chances worth 10.8 expected goals. He scored four more than his chances suggested, and nothing in his earlier years pointed to it: he scored five, five and seven in the three seasons before.

This season his chances in front of goal have been worth 2.4 expected goals in seven games. Take away the penalty and they are worth 1.6, according to FotMob, from 14 shots, only four of them on target.

The creator is back

Before last season, Gibbs-White was a playmaker. He set up 12 league goals in 2022-23 and 12 again in 2023-24. Last season, while the goals came, his chances for others fell to the lowest in the table above.

This season it has turned round. Gibbs-White's passes have set up chances worth 2.0 expected assists in seven games, close to three-quarters of last season's total. FotMob counts 20 chances created, seven of them big chances. He set up a goal at Anfield and another at Villa Park, and on Friday he was in the build-up to Neco Williams's goal, the move that ended with Daniel Muñoz crossing to the back post.

The injury, and the projections

Gibbs-White missed the 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal with a minor muscle injury. "Yes, he's ready, he trained for the entire week, so no issues," Glasner said before Ipswich, and Gibbs-White then played the full game.

FPL Tilt's projections, made the day before that match, still have him at about two points a week over the next five Gameweeks, well down the list of midfielders.

Forest go to Brentford next, then have Manchester City at home, Bournemouth away, Chelsea at home and Hull away.

Does he have FPL value?

At this season's rates, his chances add up to a goal about every three games and an assist about every three and a half. His returns have fallen short of both: one goal, from the spot, and two assists in seven games. For a midfielder who also takes the penalties and the direct free kicks, those are thin returns from good football.

What has gone is the goalscorer's value. At £7.9m he costs the same as Bryan Mbeumo and £0.1m less than Rayan Cherki and Morgan Rogers, and all three have between eight and twelve points more than his 32.

So Gibbs-White still has FPL value, as the creator with penalties he was before last season. What he no longer has is the goalscorer's value that set his £7.9m price, and Mbeumo, Cherki and Rogers cost about the same with more points. That makes him a player to keep for a manager who owns him, and a harder one to buy.

Non-penalty expected goals, shots, shots on target, chances created and big chances created are FotMob's, read the same day. FPL Tilt's projected points are from the run of 23 October 2026, made before that match. Ipswich 1-1 Nottingham Forest is from Stuart Watson's match verdict in the East Anglian Daily Times; the penalty at Anfield is from Sky Sports' match report of 29 August; Gibbs-White's injury and Glasner's words were reported by ESPN on 21 October.
