How FPL bonus points work
The short answer
In every match, the three players with the highest score in the Bonus Points System get extra points: 3 for the best, 2 for the second and 1 for the third. The score is built from what a player does in the match, and it is separate from his FPL points.
How the score is built
Every action in a match adds to or takes from a player's Bonus Points System score, the BPS. These are the ones that decide most matches:
| Action | BPS |
|---|---|
| Playing more than 60 minutes | 6 |
| A goal by a forward | 24 |
| A goal by a midfielder | 18 |
| A goal by a defender or goalkeeper | 12 |
| An assist | 9 |
| A clean sheet, for a defender or goalkeeper | 12 |
| A save | 2 |
| Scoring the goal that wins the match | 3 |
| A successful tackle | 2 |
| A shot on target | 2 |
| A yellow card | -3 |
| Missing a big chance | -3 |
| A defender or goalkeeper conceding a goal | -4 |
| A red card | -9 |
A forward gets more for a goal than a defender does. In return a defender collects from a clean sheet and from clearances, blocks and tackles, which is why a centre-back in a 1-0 win often takes the 3.
The official game publishes the full list, with close to forty actions, in its rules.
An example
Three made-up players in one match:
| Player | What he did | BPS |
|---|---|---|
| Midfielder A | 90 minutes, the winning goal, two shots on target | 6 + 18 + 3 + 4 = 31 |
| Defender B | 90 minutes, a clean sheet, two tackles, one yellow card | 6 + 12 + 4 - 3 = 19 |
| Forward C | 90 minutes, an assist, one big chance missed | 6 + 9 - 3 = 12 |
Midfielder A gets 3 bonus points, Defender B gets 2 and Forward C gets 1.
What happens in a tie
- Two players tied for first: both get 3, and the next player gets 1.
- Two players tied for second: the best gets 3, and both of them get 2.
- Two players tied for third: 3, 2, and then 1 each.
When bonus is added
Bonus points are not in a player's total while the match is being played. The official game adds them afterwards, and the statistics behind them are not changed once the Gameweek is marked as final.
That is why a mini-league table can move after the final whistle.
See it during a match
FPL Tilt's Live page works out the bonus as it stands while a match is on, and adds it to your mini-league table. It is marked as an estimate until the official game confirms it.
Rules as published by the official game for 2026/27, read on 11 October 2026.
