720,000 of us just bought Brighton. Has anyone looked at the fixtures?

De Cuyper and Groß are the two most bought players of the week, both on 53 points. Then come Liverpool away and Manchester City away, and Mitoma is close to fit. What the numbers say before you press confirm.

You know how this goes. A player gets 15 points, you buy him on the Tuesday, and that turns out to have been the 15 points.

Maxim De Cuyper got 15 on Saturday. By this afternoon about 378,000 managers had brought him in, and another 339,000 had gone for Pascal Groß. Two of the three most bought players in the game are from Brighton, and it's only Tuesday.

I get it, honestly. De Cuyper costs £5.1m, he's listed as a defender and he's been playing left wing. That almost never happens. He and Groß are on 53 points each and nobody in the game has more. If you've had them since August, fair play, you can stop posting your team now.

For everyone else, there are a few things I'd want to look at before pressing confirm.

How they got to 53

They've got to the same total, but hardly ever in the same week.

Grouped bar chart: De Cuyper scored 17, 0, 4, 11, 6 and 15; Groß scored 2, 13, 1, 17, 14 and 6

De Cuyper went 17, then a zero, then 4, before he got going again. Groß had 2 and 1 in two of the first three weeks and then went 17 and 14 back to back. So if you've only owned one of them you've had a couple of great weekends and a couple where you got nothing. If you've had both, it's been brilliant pretty much every week, and I think that's what a lot of people are trying to buy into now.

Can they keep it up?

This is the chart I like least.

Grouped bar chart: De Cuyper has 5 goals and assists from chances worth 2.5; Groß has 8 from chances worth 3.1

De Cuyper has two goals and three assists. Going by expected goals and assists in the official game, his chances were worth about two and a half. Groß has three goals and five assists from chances worth about three.

Some of that is just quality. Groß has been putting corners and free kicks on people's heads for years. But both of them are scoring at roughly double what the chances say, and I can't think of many players who've kept that going past Christmas.

I wouldn't sell either of them over it. I just wouldn't buy them expecting six more weeks like the last six.

Mitoma

The reason De Cuyper is playing on the wing at all is that Kaoru Mitoma hasn't been there. He had surgery in the summer, the Sussex Express reports, and hasn't played a minute this season. Yankuba Minteh, who plays on the other side, hasn't either.

Both are getting close. Before the Sunderland game, Fabian Hürzeler told the club's website that Mitoma, Minteh and Mats Wieffer were getting closer. "They're not fit yet," he said, and he hoped to see them back in the squad soon.

The official game has Mitoma down as expected back on 18 October, which is the day after the Gameweek 7 deadline. So this weekend is probably fine. After that I have no idea. He might stay on the wing, he might drop back to left-back, he might start sharing minutes. He'd still be a decent £5.1m defender at left-back. He just wouldn't be the player who's been getting 15.

The fixtures

Bar chart: De Cuyper is projected for 4.6 points against Palace, 3.4 at Liverpool, 2.9 at Manchester City, 4.2 against Brentford and 4.3 at Hull

Palace at home is the game everyone's buying for. After that it's Liverpool away and then City away, which is about as bad as two weeks get. Then Brentford at home and Hull away, and it looks good again.

Over the five Gameweeks De Cuyper is projected for 19.5 points and Groß for 18.6. That's fine. It's a long way short of what you'd guess from two players sitting top of the points table.

So what do you do

If you already own them, I'd leave it alone. Nothing here says sell, and you can bench them for Liverpool and City if you've got the cover.

If you're buying this week, it's probably one of these.

Buy for Palace, sell before Liverpool. That's two transfers for one match. Great if he scores. If he gets 2 you've burned two transfers and you're back where you started.

Buy and hold. You get Palace, you put up with Liverpool and City, and you've still got him for Brentford and Hull. You need a bench that plays, though.

Wait until Gameweek 10. You miss Palace, and that might hurt. But by then you'll have seen where De Cuyper plays with Mitoma back, and it won't have cost you anything to find out. He'll probably be a bit more expensive.

Don't bother. Plenty of people will get through October without either of them. It's only really a problem on the afternoon one of them scores.

I've changed my mind on this twice since Saturday, and I'll probably do it again before the deadline.

The Gameweek 7 deadline is Saturday 17 October at 11:00 UK time.
